Allergy-Friendly Halloween Fun

Halloween Fun

by Lisa Horne, FAACT Director of Marketing

For people living with food allergies and their families, Halloween can be one of the scariest times of the year. Not the goblins or ghouls – it’s the knocking door-to-door to be met with candy that may or may not contain allergens.

One ghost you CAN look forward to seeing is FAACT’s Teal Ghost at your local Walmart! Now through the end of October,  check out the Halloween section at Walmart for bins full of non-food treats sporting the FAACT Teal Ghost. Whether you are getting ready for a trunk-or-treat, neighborhood trick-or-treating, school parties, or family get-togethers, non-food Halloween fun will be a hit.

Search social media for the hashtag #FAACTsTealGhost to see not only awareness, safety, and inclusion during this spooky time of year but also the creative, non-food treats available through this partnership with Walmart. Vampire fangs, bubbles, pencils, Slinkys, musical recorders, straws, skeletons, cups, stickers, puzzles, slap bracelets, kazoos, and more!

While FAACT and Walmart have you covered with party favors and treats, FAACT also has you covered with some allergy-friendly recipes! With a little know-how and a handful of simple ingredients or supplies, you can create a magical, fun, and allergy-friendly Halloween experience.

Citrus Jack-O-Lanterns

Citrus Jack-o’-lanterns

Ingredients/Supplies:

  • Citrus of your choice (clementine, mandarins, tangerines, oranges)
  • Sharpie markers

Instructions:

Grab your favorite small citrus and simply use a Sharpie marker to draw cute faces on them. This is not only a healthy, allergy friendly option, it could double as a fun craft for children to draw the Jack-o’-lantern faces themselves.

Banana Snack

BooNaNa’s

Ingredients/Supplies:

  • Peeled bananas
  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Regular-sized chocolate chips

Instructions:

This is another simple treat that can also double as a fun DIY craft for children. Peel the bananas just prior to serving so they don’t turn brown. Cut in half across the middle, making the flat/cut portion the bottom of the ghosts. At the top where the bananas taper, simply add two mini chocolate chips for the eyes and one regular-sized chip for the mouth.

Note: Enjoy Life Chocolate Chips, Nestle, and Walmart all have allergy friendly top-8-free chocolate chip products available. If you cannot find mini chips, you could also use regular-sized chips for the same effect.

Frankenstein Cups

Frankenstein Cups

Ingredients/Supplies:

  • 9 oz clear disposable plastic cups
  • Broccoli with stems
  • Green Grapes
  • Sharpie markers

Instructions:

A healthier-for-you option that is also low stress and fun! Draw some eyes, a smiley mouth, side bolts indicative of Frankenstein, a scar above the eyebrow, and a little hairline on the plastic cups. Fill with broccoli or grapes – and voila! Cute, friendly Frankensteins!
